The other day when I was driving in the car I was listening to The Chalene Show which is a health and wellness podcast. Today we are going to talk about two simple things we need to change for living a fulfilling and purposeful life.
This is o
nly my first time listening to Chalene but after listening to this episode it kind of gotten me hook on the show. She is a certified personal trainer with a degree and she also runs her own podcast.
In this episode she talks about how to be more happier in life and have a fulfilling life. Some of the things she talks about made me start thinking about my own happiness in life. At the end of this post I will link to the podcast episode so you can listen to it as well.
Now let’s dive into today’s post and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did in writing it.
Chalene starts off the show by asking the audience nine questions. She has them put a number by each question 1 - 10. 1 means that something needs improvement and 10 means nothing needs to change.
How happy are you with your physical health? - (enough sleep, plenty of exercise, appearance)
How happy are you with your mental well being? - (managing stress, emotional energy)
How happy are you with your environment and your surrounding? - (home, work, car, not the people)
How happy are you with the things that bring you pure joy? (reading a book, painting, other hobbies)
How happy is your romantic love? - (does your husband, wife, or significant other help out)
How happy are you with your friends and family? - (do you spend enough time with them, do they drain the energy out of you)
How happy are you with your financial situation? - (are you looking for a promotion, not enough money)
How happy are you with your significance in this world?
How happy are you with your own personal growth?
Chalene then tells everyone take a look at your numbers to see what you need to improve on. But only pick two.
Let me be honest with you I could at least pick three things that I need to improve on. The three things that I need to improve on are:
Mental well being
Things that bring pure joy
My Emotional Well Being Is Far From Perfect
I sometimes let my emotions control how my day goes, which is not a good thing. Some days I have more emotions than others. A lot of things causes my mental well being to just be a cluster.
One of my favorite quotes that Chalene said “we tend to just charge ahead and continue at that one task that we are focus on. We never just take a step back and ask ourselves how are we feeling?”
Let me give you a perfect example. There was one night about a year or two ago when my website was running slow. My website was on Wordpress at the time.
Instead of calling it a night on that problem I continued to work at it until 2 AM in the morning. It was was the most foolish thing I had done. Because instead of fixing that one problem I actually broke a few more things.
So now I just made more work for myself. During my time when I had my site on WordPress I was basically spending about 90+ hours a week managing it.
Another thing that I learned from this podcast episode from Chalene is that I tend to focus on the things that come easy to me.
One of the things that comes the most easiest to me is working out. It’s important to me and I always find time to workout. Working out hasn’t always came easy to me, but now it has.
I truly appreciate that Chalene pointed out that as a society we tend to continue doing the things that come easy to us. We don’t on the harder tasks and we tend to try to avoid them.
I Need To Find Happiness In Simple Things
I love reading books, playing video games, watching Netflix, going to the movies, hanging out with friends and family. I don’t always feel like I take time to do the things that bring me pure joy.
I always tend to be finishing up one more task or just one more thing. Then all of a sudden when it’s time to go to bed time has gotten away from me. Has this ever happen to you?
My Personal Financial Health Could Be Better
Now I am not going to tell you on how much I want to make to live a comfortable life. I am also not going to share with you on how much money I make as an Uber and Lyft driver.
But the one thing I will tell you my financial situation could be better and this year is not over yet. So I am going to make a few changes to make this situation better.
How Am I Going To Improve My Mental Well Being?
After the end of each task that I get done during the day I am going to simply take a step back. I am then going to ask myself “am I able to continue on to the next task or do I need a break?”
How Am I Going To Do More Things That Bring Me Pure Joy?
I have been blocking out times on my Google Calendar for the things that I like to do. Like reading books and watching Netflix. I just have to listen better to those reminders on my computer when it says the event it will be over in 30 minutes.
So I don’t continue to at that same task so I can enjoy other things in life and not just focus on working on my website. Don’t get me wrong I love what I do, but we all need breaks to recharge the battery.
How Am I Going To Improve My Personal Financial Health?
I am going to work for Uber and Lyft during my free time during the summer months, and during the semesters in college. I am going to do my best in saving money than spending money.
Two Things We Need To Change In Order To Live A Life Of Purpose
Another thing that Chalene talked about in her podcast was that there are two things we have to work on in order to change.
Narrate our own path
Lower our expectations
That really stuck with me because I know I am my own worst critic. I always tend to be hard on myself when I don’t get things done that I want to get done.
I want to narrate my own path so it’s not written for me. I don’t want the same 9 to 5 job like everyone else. I want more from life than that.
The next thing the talks about when you feel off what is that one word that describes that feeling? For me my word is overwhelmed.
The Reason why I pick the word overwhelmed is because I could be overwhelmed from things stressing me out, overwhelmed with things that frustrate me, and overwhelmed with different thoughts going through my head.
One of the last thing that really stuck out to me during Chalene podcast was that we need to change our mindset. Her last quote that I really like was “if someone has done it before you, you too can do it.”
I took that quote to heart because it reminds me about the touch niche that I am in for my own blog. Health and wellness is so popular filled with so many blogs.
But there is just one me. No one has the same voice as me, I also have a different perspective on health and wellness than other websites.
If someone has lost a lot of weight before you or someone did a hard exercise before you. It doesn’t mean you can’t do it if it’s already been done.
