According to LiveScience they said:

Research has found that exposure to blue light suppresses the production of melatonin more than any other type of light. It is believed that the shorter wavelengths in blue light is what causes the body to produce less melatonin because the body is more sensitive to this type of light. 

I totally agree with LiveScience because now my sleep is getting affected by blue light yet again. So back to the question how cell phones affect sleep or in this case my sleep?

I just got Android Oreo on my phone last night, I was intrigued by the new look everything had kind of a flat kind of look to it. It was a very interesting update indeed and then I realize the notification tray no longer filter under my blue light filter.

What Is A Blue Light Filter?

A blue light filter is an app or a setting on a phone, tablet or a computer that can filter out the blue light. For a real life example would be The Twilight App. This app turned my phone screen red at night to filter out.

However, That’s No Longer The Case For Me Anymore

On Android Oreo on my Motorola G5 Plus phone the bright blue light is back in my face. Everything worked perfectly fine on Nougat which was their last update. Now my blue light filter app or any blue light filter app will not work to fix this problem.

Everything Rests In The Hands Of Google, Motorola, And Lenovo

The one big down fall in Android because it is open source meaning that every phone manufacture, every phone carrier can modify the update to their liking. Knowing these three stooges they probably won’t fix this problem any time soon.

In my own opinion I think Google, Lenovo, and Motorola should of left the blue light filter setting alone. One of my Facebook friends have a Samsung S9 and they have the Oreo update. He has the built in blue light filter.

Harvard Medical School - While light of any kind can suppress the secretion of melatonin, blue light at night does so more powerfully. Harvard researchers and their colleagues conducted an experiment comparing the effects of 6.5 hours of exposure to blue light to exposure to green light of comparable brightness. The blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as the green light and shifted circadian rhythms by twice as much (3 hours vs. 1.5 hours).

WebMD - “The more research we do, the more evidence we have that excess artificial light at night can have a profound, deleterious effect on many aspects of human health,” says Czeisler, who is also director of sleepmedicine at Harvard Medical School. “It is a growing public health concern.”

ScienceDaily - The short-wavelength blue light, emitted by the screens we watch, damages the duration, and even more so, the quality of our sleep. This is the conclusion of a new study undertaken by the University of Haifa and Assuta Sleep Clinic. The study also found that watching screens that emit red light does not cause damage, and sleep after exposure to it was similar to normal sleep. "The light emitted by most screens -- computers, smartphones, and tablets -- is blue light that damages the body's cycles and our sleep," explains Prof. Abraham Haim from the University of Haifa, one of the authors of the study. "The solution must be the use of the existing filters that prevent the emission of this light."
